Barak Meets With Abbas On Eve Of US Talks - August 31, 2010 (The Jerusalem Post)

On the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's departure for Washington to relaunch peace negotiations with the Palestinians, Defense Minister Ehud Barak secretly met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman on Monday night after having met Jordanian King Abdullah at his palace on Sunday. After his meeting with King Abdullah, Barak returned to Israel to update the prime minister on their conversation before returning to Amman to meet Abbas.

Europe Still Pushing For Superstate Unity - August 27, 2010 (Europa.eu)

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso spoke August 27th in favor of peace and strengthening a unified Europe, saying, "The [financial] crisis has demonstrated how interdependent Europe's economies are. It shows how a crisis in one Member State can affect us all, not only in the euro area but in the entire EU and in global markets. The crisis is a last wake-up call to us Europeans. A truly united European Union is needed to emerge from this crisis stronger than before. [It] underlines the need for action in all 27 Member States and the European institutions. But it also shows that action to promote growth and innovation will not, by itself, be enough. First, confidence must be restored."

Irony: Harvard Professor Fudged Evolution of Morality Evidence - August 31, 2010 (Telegraph.co.uk)

"Professor Marc Hauser was found solely responsible, after a thorough investigation by a faculty investigating committee, for eight instances of scientific misconduct." Hauser's undoing seems to have been his experiments, many of which depended on videotaping cotton-topped tamarin monkeys and noting their responses. Hauser produced remarkable findings that blurred the distinctions between how animals and humans think, popularizing his ideas about the origins of morality with his book Moral Minds: How Nature Designed Our Universal Sense of Right and Wrong.

Dry-Run Terrorist Suspects Arrested - August 30, 2010 (ABC News)

Two men taken off a Chicago-to-Amsterdam United Airlines flight in the Netherlands have been charged by Dutch police with "preparation of a terrorist attack." US officials said the two appeared to be travelling with what were termed "mock bombs" in their luggage. A spokesman for the Dutch public prosecutor, Ernst Koelman, confirmed the two men were arrested this morning and said "the investigation is ongoing."

US Troops Sent To AZ Border - August 31, 2010 (CNN)

Additional National Guard troops assigned to the Mexican border under President Barack Obama's border security initiative have started reporting to their posts, officials said Monday. More than 30 National Guard members have begun their deployment as part of the administration's border protection plan, according to Special Agent Mario Escalante with US Customs and Border Protection.

Russian Arms Sale To Syria Concerns Israel - August 30, 2010 (Haaretz)

Defense Minister Ehud Barak will visit Russia next week to discuss Israel's security concerns and Russian interest in purchasing Israeli arms, an Israeli official said on Monday. Israel is worried by Iranian and Syrian efforts to acquire Russian anti-aircraft missile systems and has long lobbied Moscow to support UN Security Council sanctions targeting Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

The Ground Zero Provocation - August 20, 2010 (National Review Online)

Radical Islam ... has changed the course of nations and affected the lives of millions. It is the reason every airport in the West is an armed camp and every land is on constant alert. Ground Zero is the site of the most lethal attack of that worldwide movement, which consists entirely of Muslims, acts in the name of Islam, and is deeply embedded within the Islamic world. These are regrettable facts, but facts they are. And that is why putting up a monument to Islam in this place is not just insensitive but provocative.

Israel Will Defend Its Citizens Ayalon Tells Iran - August 24, 2010 (The Jerusalem Post)

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon this week told the Iranian people by radio that a regional war initiated by Teheran was a distinct possibility, adding that "Israel is committed to defending its citizens and if attacked will act accordingly." "A fear exists that Iran - as it becomes more pressured by sanctions – will goad those under its patronage in Hizbullah and Hamas to initiate military action against Israel. There's also a possibility that Iran will make a military move against the Arab Gulf states and harm the flow of oil to the world, in which case the entire situation will degrade into widespread confrontations."

US Must Hold The Course In Afghanistan - August 24, 2010 (BBC News)

The man in charge of the United States Marines, who has just returned from a tour of Afghanistan, has said President Obama's plan to start withdrawing troops next summer has given sustenance to the enemy. General James Conway said that it will be a few years before the time is right to hand over to Afghan forces in some key areas. He says America is growing tired of war, but his troops sense conditions are turning their way. He said their only concern was expressed by a person who told him to not let the country go wobbly on us.

Arabic To Be Required Study In Israeli Schools - August 24, 2010 (BBC News)

The Israeli authorities are introducing a new scheme to make Arabic-language classes compulsory in state schools. The programme, which will start in 170 schools in northern Israel, will make lessons mandatory for fifth graders. Education officials hope the scheme, called "Ya Salam", will turn language into a cultural bridge and promote tolerance between Jews and Arabs. Arab students currently are required to learn Hebrew while Jewish children can take Arabic as an additional language.

So You Want To Homeschool? - August 24, 2010 (The Washington Times)

The new school year looms, but you've decided that, for the first time, you and your student aren't going to be a part of it. No more brick-and-mortar institution for you guys. Excellent. Making your decision is, in fact, the first step. Don't underestimate the importance of crossing the t's and dotting the i's. Some regions are home-school friendly and encourage parents who are taking responsibility for their children's education. On the other hand, some regions require home-schoolers to toe the line very carefully. You can save yourself a lot of grief simply by being well prepared...

Dealing With Evolution In School - August 17, 2010 (The Discovery Institute)

School is starting again, and parents once again wonder how to deal with the militant evolutionism being taught in their children's science classrooms. The Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, a think-tank for intelligent design, does not recommend trying to get alternatives to evolution taught in the classroom. This ID group suggests a different approach: "Instead of mandating intelligent design, Discovery Institute seeks to increase the coverage of evolution in textbooks. It believes that evolution should be fully and completely presented to students, and they should learn more about evolutionary theory, including its unresolved issues. In other words, evolution should be taught as a scientific theory that is open to critical scrutiny, not as a sacred dogma that can't be questioned..."
