NEW!
Europe Still Pushing For Superstate Unity - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso spoke August 27th in favor of peace and strengthening a unified Europe, saying, "The [financial] crisis has demonstrated how interdependent Europe's economies are. It shows how a crisis in one Member State can affect us all, not only in the euro area but in the entire EU and in global markets.
The crisis is a last wake-up call to us Europeans. A truly united European Union is needed to emerge from this crisis stronger than before. [It] underlines the need for action in all 27 Member States and the European institutions. But it also shows that action to promote growth and innovation will not, by itself, be enough. First, confidence must be restored."
European Court Rules Against Crucifixes in Italy's Public Schools - The Vatican on Tuesday denounced a ruling by the European court of human rights that said the display of crucifixes in Italian public schools violates religious and education freedoms.
In a decision that could force a review of the use of religious symbols in government-run schools across Europe, the court ordered Italy to pay a $7,390 fine to a mother in northern Italy who fought for eight years to have crucifixes removed from her children's public school classrooms. The Italian government said it would appeal.
Europe Edges Out North America as Richest Region - The economic and financial crisis of the past 18 months has transformed the global map of the world's wealthiest people, with Europe nudging out North America as the richest region, according to Boston Consulting Group.
EU divided on plans for talks with Turkey - The European Union remained divided over the terms for opening accession talks with Turkey as member governments struggled to agree on a declaration pressing Ankara to normalize relations with Cyprus. Cyprus joined the EU last year, but Turkey's refusal to recognize it is exposing tensions within the Union and clouding the opening of membership talks on October 3.
EU nations fail to agree reply to Turkey on Cyprus - EU countries failed on Wednesday to agree a response to Turkey's refusal to recognise Cyprus but said they would hold more talks to try and resolve the issue, which could wreck Ankara's bid to join the bloc.
