Monitor The Strategic Trends
Introduction:
The ancient people called Magog are commonly believed to have been the ancestors of the Russian nation. The prophet Ezekiel spoke of an invasion of Israel by Russia, which has not yet been fulfilled. What could cause Russia to come against the tiny nation of Israel -- which has no oil and no real strategic value? This question has puzzled Bible scholars for centuries. However, recent developments in the Middle East have for the first time in history lent credence to this long-awaited prophecy.

Russian Arms Sale To Syria Concerns Israel - Defense Minister Ehud Barak will visit Russia next week to discuss Israel's security concerns and Russian interest in purchasing Israeli arms, an Israeli official said on Monday.
Israel is worried by Iranian and Syrian efforts to acquire Russian anti-aircraft missile systems and has long lobbied Moscow to support UN Security Council sanctions targeting Tehran's disputed nuclear program.
Russian-Backed Iran Nuclear Plant To Go Live in Sept - The Bushehr nuclear plant in southern Iran being built with help from Russia is scheduled to go on stream next month, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted in the local media as saying on Monday.
Ramin Mehmanparast said construction activities at the plant was going as per schedule and it would start functioning in about one and a half-months.
Ten People Charged With Spying For Russia - Ten alleged members of a Russian spy-ring have been charged in the US with acting as foreign agents. The suspects are accused of posing as ordinary citizens, some living together as couples for years. They were charged with conspiracy to act as unlawful agents of a foreign government, a crime which carries up to five years in prison. A Russian foreign ministry spokesman said the allegations were contradictory. "We are studying the information. There are a lot of contradictions," spokesman Igor Lyakin-Frolov told the AFP news agency, declining further comment.
Russian Navy To Maintain Global Presence - The Russian Navy considers intensive combat training and continuing its presence in the world's oceans a priority, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
To accomplish these goals, Russian warships will take part in a number of large-scale naval drills, continue patrols of pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast and make about 50 port calls in foreign countries in the second half of 2010.
Russia Delays Resetting Relations With US - After months of delay and discord, administration officials said, they have learned that when it comes to deal-making with Moscow, nothing is done until it is done, and rarely will it go as smoothly as anticipated. The arms control treaty is part of a complicated diplomatic effort to forge a new relationship with Russia, interlinked with issues like Iran, missile defense and Afghanistan. Mr. Obama had hoped to restore ties with some relatively easier deals that could lead to more trust and deeper cooperation in areas that have long divided the former adversaries.
